Occlusal Splint for Tooth Grinding Stanhope Gardens

Uncontrolled tooth grinding (especially during sleep) can wear away teeth and cause unhealthy stress on the tooth structure. Causes for tooth grinding vary: daily tension is the most common trigger.

The results if left unchecked can lead to all sorts of problems such as headaches, neck aches, problems with the jaw joint, sensitivity of the teeth, wearing down of the tooth surfaces resulting in a change in your bite and even cracked teeth. Often an Occlusal Splint is required to protect against this problem.

Splints are used to restore functional harmony and are fabricated with clear acrylic occlusal pads which allow for easy adjustment.

Not only will a splint protect your teeth, it will also alleviate discomfort associated with this problem.

Grinding, also known as Bruxism, is a condition that many people suffer from, it happens when you clench your jaw muscles and grind your teeth together during your sleep. Bruxism is an involuntary habit. You may not even know that you are grinding your teeth at night but you may find out from your family or partner.

How does Bruxism or Grinding affect your teeth?

Grinding causes both the upper and lower teeth to wear against each other this leads to gradual shortening and chipping of the biting surfaces and edges of your teeth. Grinding can not only lead to aesthetic issues, but also problems such as sensitivity, higher risk of decay, headaches, neck and shoulder problems, ringing noise heard in the ears, sleep disturbance, strain and injury to the TMJ joint.

How can we help?

Depending on your case, we can restore your teeth back to their original shape and appearance. We can also supply you with an Occlusal Splint or Night Guard. Our occlusal splints are a hard acrylic guard that our dentists specifically fit to your upper jaw. The occlusal splint covers the biting surface of your teeth. As your teeth are covered by the splint, it very effectively protects your teeth from the destructive forces of Bruxism or Grinding. The splint does not stop you from grinding but it does supply you with the ability to guide your jaw into a neutral position (relieving pressure on the jaw joint).
